In pre-Islamic Iranian mythology, the Caucasus is one of the possible locations of the mysterious Ring Mountains. The world-spanning mountain range, behind which lies the "infinite nothingness", as they say. This is already mentioned in the Epic of Gilgamesh.
A similar cosmogonic idea also exists in many myths of the Altai peoples of Central and North Asia. Although other mountain ranges besides the Caucasus could be considered, the linguistic proximity of the Persian words Qaf, or Kaf, Neo-Persian Kūh-e Qaf or Kuh-e Kaf ("Mountain Kaf", Persian كوه قاف), Old Persian Kapkafk or Arabic Ǧabal al-Qāf speaks in favor of the Caucasus,
